“Victims branded malevolent, and villains in the guise of heroes. In a kingdom of mortals and monsters, I am the latter, or so they told me. I wear not the face of who I am, but the masks they gave me. They made me their burden, their princess, their captor and enemy, so I broke their walls and became their queen; nameless empty titles, all of them. The price of poison and pearls pays the same, so I gave them what they gave me, a bitter trade, but a deal’s a deal.”

A book that broadens the limitations of identity, The Girl with Many Names combines myth and fairytale into a single chronological narrative. But unlike many renditions of a similar nature, this dark retelling deviates from the conventional perspective an archetypal hero to give a voice to traditionally stigmatized characters. Historically, the mask of anonymity has always clouded the motive of classic antagonists, who have, for the most part, been preserved unnamed—save for empty titles that merely define status or the role played in the protagonist’s eyes: evil queen/stepmother/witch; it’s always irrationally angry women with a bone to pick. But this tale ditches the tiresome damsel in distress motif to expose the truth behind the many faces of the once nameless villain.

With a more realistic approach, the story explores the grueling circumstances that may have governed the choices made by the enigmatic characters of old, and the significance of nature versus nurture. The reader follows an antihero on a journey of self-discovery, a road paved with fate and revenge, and laden with notorious characters that will challenge her morality. But as she navigates through these hapless encounters that reveal the bitter truths of identity and redemption, an infamous adversary awaits a predestined confrontation.

This work of fiction is a tapestry woven from the fabric of several timeless tales, illustrating an entirely new picture that will challenge everything you thought you knew.
